The busy streets of Bangkok

After having slept quite well, we woke early and ready to hit the streets of Bangkok. Walking outside the hotel, I immediately recalled what I remembered most about Bangkok-- the heat, congestion and friendly, irrepressible smiles of the Thai people. Having spent considerable time in Bangkok on previous visits and planning to visit the legendary Bridge over the River Kwai, we decided to cut a little time from Bangkok on this trip to make the trip to Kanchanaburi fit neatly into the schedule. With that in mind, we spent our first two days in Bangkok to simply relax and stroll at leisure with no real plan other than to simply adjust to the 90 degree heat which felt like 100 to me since I brought along an Indiana cold and it lingered for a couple more days after arrival and kicked my behind after the long tiring flights.

Ninety minutes after departing Indianapolis we were boarding our first connecting flight, a Boeing 747 at the McNamara terminal in Detroit, Northwest's world gateway. Sixteen hours later and feeling it, we were pushing back from the gate at Tokyo's Narita International for our third flight and final leg, the seven hour flight to Thailand. Nearly twenty eight hours after we had boarded our first flight in Indianapolis, we touched down at Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Asia's tourist capital, the sprawling urban mass of Bangkok, home to over 10 million people. We cleared Customs and Immigration, exchanged a few dollars for Thai baht and headed to the airport's official taxi stand to queue in line to pay for our cab into the city. We reminisced the excitement of being back in Bangkok; but fully exhausted, we headed to our rooms for some much needed sleep.
